What an Australian tax invoice must include
If your business is registered for GST, the ATO requires a tax invoice for sales of $82.50 or more (including GST). Getting the format right matters because your customers need a valid tax invoice to claim GST credits, and a missing field is the most common reason an invoice gets bounced back.
For sales under $1,000, a tax invoice must show seven things: the words "Tax invoice" (usually as the document title), your identity as the seller, your Australian Business Number (ABN), the date the invoice was issued, a description of the items sold including quantity and price, the GST amount payable (or a statement that GST is included in the total price), and the extent to which each sale is a taxable sale. For sales of $1,000 or more, the invoice must also include the buyer's identity or ABN.
The GST amount can be shown two ways. You can list GST as a separate line, which this tool does with the "Add 10% GST" and "Prices include GST" options, or, if GST is exactly one eleventh of the total, you can print a statement such as "Total price includes GST". Showing the GST line is the safer default and the one most bookkeepers prefer.
If you are not registered for GST, the rules flip. You must not issue a document titled "Tax invoice" and you must not charge GST. Your document should be titled "Invoice", and it is good practice to state that no GST has been charged. This tool handles that automatically when you pick the "No GST (not registered)" option: the title changes to "Invoice", the GST line disappears, and the statement "No GST has been charged" is printed near the total.
Rounding follows the standard convention: amounts are rounded half up to the nearest cent, so a GST amount of $10.005 prints as $10.01. Everything you type stays in your browser. The PDF is generated on your device, and share links encode the invoice in the link itself rather than storing it on a server.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need an ABN to issue an invoice?
- You should include your ABN on invoices. Without one, businesses paying you may be required to withhold 47% of the payment under the ATO's "no ABN withholding" rules, unless an exception applies.
- When do I have to register for GST?
- Registration is required once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 in a rolling 12-month period ($150,000 for non-profits), or immediately if you drive taxis or ride-share. Below that threshold, registration is optional.
- Is my invoice data stored on a server?
- No. Everything is stored in your own browser's local storage, and PDFs are generated on your device. Share links pack the invoice data into the link itself, so it never touches a server.
